Private Postpartum Healing Ceremony
Private Postpartum Healing Ceremony
Sometimes, it is called ‘closing the bones’ or ‘warming the bones’. These ceremonies are designed to help support the mother in integrating both physically and emotionally from the birth of her child.
The transformational experience of becoming a new mom requires gentleness and care of the body, mind and spirit. Ceremonies are time-honored ways we offer this care. These ceremonies can be done privately in the comfort of a new mama's home or can be done in a group of mamas (click here for details on our seasonal ceremonies), alone or in the presence of a few close girlfriends, a mother, or any other women folk you’d like to witness your threshold closing from maiden to mother. There are many ways these ceremonies can look; what matters is that they meet the needs of those women.
Care is given to the mom to help heal and nurture her into wholeness.
The ceremony lasts around 3 hours, so having someone to help with the baby may be helpful. The ritual begins with a hot bath infused with special herbs and flowers that I bring to calm and center the mama. Either during the bath or after, she is then invited to recall the birth of her baby, the details, the feelings, whatever aspects of the birth or her new role as a mother are lingering that she may want to resolve, any trauma or concerns can be protein up here and or it can be a joyful revealing of the special day that you became a mother. The mother is then led to her bed and is wrapped up with various materials to stay warm and then lies down. One friend and I sequentially “hug” her body together, from crown to toe, with a Rebozo (a long piece of cloth). This squeezing or sealing is a massage-like pressure that nourishes the bones and mimics the feeling of being born through the birth canal.
Once complete, mam is welcome to lie quietly and integrate her experience as being reborn into herself as a mother. We use this time to acknowledge the beauty and power that her body and soul have given to her child's birthing and now her own becoming. Praising and supporting her in every way. This process literally helps “close” a mother’s body, which “opens” in so many ways, both in preparation for, and during birth itself. During the ritual, pelvic bones are pulled back to their pre-pregnancy placement, and shrinkage of the uterus is facilitated. The ritual can also help “close” a new Mother energetically, as both pregnancy and particularly the intense process of labor and birth, can be very vulnerable times for a woman, psychologically and psychically. The blood loss during birth is thought to induce a “cold” state, so the hot bath helps restore her warmth and energy. It can also increase milk flow, help milk to let down into the breasts, prevent the breast milk from being “cold,” and address muscle fatigue, heaviness in the limbs, edema, appetite loss, and constipation.
The ritual supports the new mother in integrating and healing emotionally, physically, and spiritually from the transformation and experience of becoming a mom so that she can fully arrive as a mother. So often, after a baby is born, all the attention is placed on the new baby, and the mother herself, who is also going through such a vast change, can be under-cared for. This tradition is one way we mother the mother and empower her. The ceremony is designed to support each woman’s unique needs and situation.
